Hoe maak jij onze klanten blij? is changing retail to make daily life simpler for 12 million customers. A mission we take on with 45,000 partners that enrich our retail tech platform with unique propositions. Combined, we offer 30 million articles and achieve peak sales of 700 items per minute. That record was set on Black Friday 2020, and you could argue that online sales were further boosted by ‘black swan’ Covid-19. But what would the business impact of other natural or man-made events be? And how can we best prepare for them, so that our colleagues remain safe, and our customers and partners don’t experience significant downtime or delays?

Wat je doet as Business Continuity Manager?

  • Inventory calamities that could significantly impact our organization or parts thereof
  • Quantify the potential impact of those black swan scenarios for different domains and departments (e.g., from customer, partner, and commercial perspectives)
  • Come up with solid business continuity plans to avoid or at least minimize fallout per domain
  • Become the go-to BCM counterpart for all stakeholders: the person who points out perilous ravines – and how to safely navigate around them
  • Inspire departments to create clear and concise plans, drive adoption, and monitor follow-through
  • Update, optimize and promote the business continuity strategy, conduct and/or facilitate audits, and create commitment for changes, all the way up to Board level

As Business Continuity Manager, you may initially be viewed as someone who meddles in departmental affairs and hinders operations, but once people get to know you, they’ll realize why your guidance matters.  After all, while we do expect you to spot potential calamities, we especially look to you for inspired contingency plans that make the future look bright again. Whether you envision the Zombie Apocalypse coming soon to a digital retail platform near you, or zoom in on more prosaic topics, such as natural disasters, fires, terrorism, employee errors, cyber-attacks or key partners going bankrupt, you create, own and promote the master plan that describes the impact per calamity, and how we should deal with each scenario swiftly, decisively and effectively.

While you take a holistic approach – all domains are in scope – you will probably zoom in on Logistics first. Mainly because of the size and complexity of the logistics operation; the number of dependencies to fulfill an order is astonishing. Of note, developing the master document is only the first step, because we also invite you to convince stakeholders to run with plans and future-proof their departments. E.g., by developing and implementing training cycles. And, as you probably guessed, business continuity may be your favorite playing field, but it’s not necessarily top of mind for your stakeholders. So your ability to convey a sense of urgency, and generate traction and follow-up, is crucial to success. That said, the momentum is already there. In part because Covid-19 has taught us that we are more vulnerable than we realized. As for your place within the organization: this role is positioned within the Operations Control team, which is responsible for meeting millions of customer expectations, each day, every day. Other areas where you will definitely have an impact include tech, People& (HR, minus the ‘resources’ connotation), finance, and the commercial operation. You report directly to the Manager Operations Control and advise on Board level.
